Professor of Russian at the University of Oxford and a Fellow of the British Academy. She has written widely on Russian culture from the late eighteenth century to the present day, and her recent books include St Petersburg: Shadows of the Past (Yale University Press, 2014) and Socialist Churches: Radical Secularization and the Preservation of the Past in Petrograd and Leningrad (Northern Illinois University Press, 2016). She has also published various translations from Russian into English, including Leonid Borodin’s The Third Truth, Sergei Kaledin’s The Humble Cemetery, and poetry by Mayakovsky, Tsvetaeva, Elena Shvarts, Olga Sedakova, Maria Stepanova, and others.
